Marchand, Michel; Caprais, Jean-claude; Cossonmannevy, Ma; Moriniere, P.
The aim of this work is to study the input, transfer and distribution processes of chlorinated insecticides (lindane, DDT) and PCB residues in a semi-closed coastal marine environment. Measurements are made in sea water, rain water and sediment samples. Distribution coefficients between sea water and sediment are determined for several organochlorine insecticide and PCB compounds. The results show an important transfer of chlorinated residues from the atmosphere to the marine environment. The highest residue levels in the sediments are observed near other urban and industrial pollution sources. Analyses of mussels show that this mollusc can be used as a biological indicator of sea water pollution. Concentration factors are determined for lindane,...

Abarnou, Alain; Robineau, Daniel; Michel, Pierre.
Top predators like marine mammals have been intensively used for monitoring the contamination of the marine environment, particularly in industrialized coastal areas of the Northern Atlantic Ocean. Such data concerning contamination in the Southern hemisphere are very scarce. Samples were taken in the fatty protuberance of the forehead (melon) from eleven Commerson's dolphins (Cephalorhynchus commersonii, Lacépède, 1804) caught in the coastal waters of the Kerguelen Islands (Southern Indian Ocean). They were analyzed for DDT, PCB and HCB, using capillary gaz chromatography. The levels of contamination [DDT= 1 150 ± 650, PCB = 1 150 ± 770, HCB=500±300ng/g of extracted matter (lipids)] are between ten and a hundred times Jess than those found in similar...

Fish as bioindicators of brackish ecosystem health: integrating biomarker responses and target pollutant concentrations ArchiMer
Corsi, I; Mariottini, M; Sensini, C; Lancini, L; Focardi, S.
Biological responses and contaminant levels in biological tissues were investigated in fish specimens of grass goby (Zosterisessor ophiocephalus) collected in spring 2000 in a moderately polluted brackish ecosystem, the Orbetello lagoon (southern coast of Tuscany, Italy). The complexity of harmful effects that contaminants may cause in fish over time was assessed. General condition indices (somatic liver index, and gonadal somatic index), cytochrome P450 enzymes, acetylcholinesterase activity and ovarian morphology were integrated with the content of organochlorines (OCs-hexachlorobenzene, DDTs and polychlorinated biphenyls) in liver and ovaries and p-nonylphenol (NP) and lower ethoxylate (NPE(1-2)) content in muscle and ovaries as well. Samples collected...
